The Section of Interventional Radiology at Lenox Hill Hospital employs the latest in imaging technology to treat numerous diverse diseases. Patients benefit from the care of specialized radiologists who, as part of Northwell Health, have access to the extensive clinical services across the system. The interventionalists communicate closely with other physicians involved in the patient’s care ensuring safe and successful treatment outcomes. The methods used by the interventional radiologists include fluoroscopy (real time X-rays), ultrasound and CAT scans. Using these tools, interventional radiologists introduce small tubes called catheters into patients' bodies to deliver targeted, minimally invasive therapies for a number of medical conditions.
Almost all of the procedures performed by interventional radiologists involve very small incisions and are done under light sedation. Many procedures are performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospitalization. In some cases, these therapies have replaced more invasive surgical therapies in the treatment of certain diseases and, therefore, are associated with a shorter recovery period.
Interventional radiologists are physicians who receive their initial training in diagnostic radiology (learning to interpret studies such as CAT scans, ultrasound and MRI) and then receive specialized training in performing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using imaging guidance. The interventional radiologists at Lenox Hill Hospital are board-certified by the American College of Radiology in both diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology and are members of the Society of Interventional Radiology.
Education & training
The interventional radiologists participate in the Lenox Hill Hospital residency program in diagnostic radiology. The first three years of residency training include a rotation in interventional radiology where residents benefit from the expertise of the physician team.
Research & clinical trials
In collaboration with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the interventional radiologists at Lenox Hill Hospital conduct research studies in an effort to find cures and treatments for the most common, debilitating and troubling diseases.
